Course Overview:
This unique new training program blends the best of welfare and counselling training, opening many rewarding and exciting doors for graduates.
The course has been endorsed by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) as a quality counselling training product. Graduates of the course may register with this organisation as a Professional Counsellor, entitling them to legitimately work in private practice, underneath the banner of the ACA, or be employed within their organisation as a counselling professional.
This program is particularly beneficial for Community Workers who need specialized skills to work effectively in a dynamic and challenging environment. The program will provide workers with:
Information about:
- Local, state and national community support agencies
- How to refer for professional help
- Legislation and legal requirements in counselling/consultation practice
- Client, counselor and organizational risk management practices
- Mental illness, suicide intervention, requirements for working with children, critical incident debriefing, etc.
Training in:
- Quality psychologically sound brief counselling strategies for a range of situations and client/worker needs and,
- Tools to effectively support clients/workers in their own goals.
Employment Opportunities:
Graduates of the course may register with The Australian Counsellors Association (ACA) as a Professional Counsellor, entitling them to legitimately work in private practice, underneath the banner of the ACA, or be employed within their organisation as a counseling professional.
Graduates may also gain employment in the welfare sector, as youth worker, first point of contact, women’s worker, intake officer, support worker, etc.

This course is suitable for individuals wishing to work as a counselor one-on-one with clients (privately or within an organisation) and for individuals wishing to enter the Community Welfare sector. This course would be particularly beneficial for Community Workers working with clients with complex social/emotional issues impacting life choices and well being.

Entrance Requirements:
To gain entry into this course you need to demonstrate:
- Language and literacy skills sufficient to meet course requirements
- Commitment to understanding all course requirements
- Genuine and / or demonstrated interest in learning
- Ability to interact appropriately within a group setting
- Clear oral communication skills
Please note that due to legislative requirements, you need to be at least 18 years of age to gain employment in the community services industry.
Community Service professionals are in a position of trust and work with vulnerable people, so you will need to undergo a routine security check by the Victoria Police. ICCS provide you with all the necessary forms and have a discounted student rate available.
Practical Placement:
Along with your class time, you also need to complete 250 hours of practical placement within the Community Services sector. We ask that you identify 3 organisation’s that you are interested in working with and bring these with you to your first day of class. Our friendly trainer’s are more than happy to help you follow up your leads.
Mixed Mode Delivery:
ICCS offer the Diploma of Community Welfare Work (CHC50702) as a mixed mode learning program, using a combination of on the job, off the job and self paced study. Whilst contact time involves one session per week plus weekend workshops, the program is classed as Full Time so we suggest you allow yourself plenty of time at home to complete your readings and assessment activities.
This program provides you with an excellent opportunity to obtain a nationally recognized qualification and complete your training time efficiently, in a supportive and helpful environment.

Can I apply for exemptions?
RPL and RCC is available to all students. If you have completed any of the above units previously, a $70 discount is given, per unit. Please note a minimum fee of $4,200 is applicable for this course.
Course Pathways:
This course is part of the Community Services Training package and provides an excellent opportunity for entry into this industry. On completion of this program you can continue your Community Services Studies by undertaking additional units to complete either of the following qualifications:
- Diploma of Employment Services (only an additional 6 units required)
- Advanced Diploma of Community Welfare Work (only an additional 5 units required)
University articulation:
If you wish to go further with your interest in welfare, you may also continue study by entry into University undergraduate programs (available by distance education). James Cook University Townsville Social Work Department gives credit for 7 subjects (8 in a year). Sunshine Coast University gives 1 year credit.
